American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP)
The National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) represents the combined work of advocates, clinicians, researchers and survivors around the nation. It lays out a framework for action to prevent suicide and guides development of an array of services and programs that must be developed. It is designed to be a catalyst for social change with the power to transform attitudes, policies, and services. The NSSP Goals and Objectives for Action was published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in May of 2001, with leadership from the Surgeon General.

SA/VE (Suicide Awareness / Voices of Education)
SAVE's mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, eliminate stigma and serve as a resource to those touched by suicide.

SPAN USA (Suicide Prevention Action Network)
SPAN USA's is to provide a way for survivors of suicide - those who have lost someone to suicide - to transform their grief into positive action to prevent future tragedies.

The Links National Resource Center for Suicide Prevention and Aftercare
The LNRC is dedicated to reaching out to those affected by suicide and connecting them to resources, through speeches and workshops concerning depression, warning signs of suicide, and how to respond and get help; resource materials including a prevention packet of information; telephone counseling; information referrals concerning other resources and organizations; suicide curriculum for high school students and referrals for support groups for survivors of suicide (SOS).

The Jed Foundation
The Jed Foundation was established in order to prevent suicide on college campuses and focus on the underlying causes of suicide. The Jed Foundation convenes higher education and government leaders as well as scientific research and mental health experts in order to design effective prevention programs that reflect the best in current thinking. They create innovative web sites, such as UlifelineTM, which brings help directly to students by linking them to their respective college health centers.

Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention
The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention is in the process of developing a Canadian blueprint of a national strategy for suicide prevention. The purpose is to articulate what a national strategy would look like that world, in turn, prompt action by all segments of Canadian society including all government levels.

International Association for Suicide Prevention
IASP is dedicated to preventing suicidal behavior, to alleviate its effects, and to provide a forum for academians, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors.

Choose Life
Choose Life is a national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide in Scotland. Choose Life has a 10 year plan aimed at reducing suicides in Scotland by 20% by the year 2013.

The Jason Foundation
In 1997, The Jason Foundation was founded by Clark Flatt after losing his sixteen year-old son, Jason, to the silent epidemic of youth suicide. Since then, The Jason Foundation has worked to help educate young people, parents, teachers, and others who work with young people about youth suicide. Their mission is helping young people deal with the pressures of growing up by offering choices other than suicide as an answer to problems.

Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Committee
Serving southeastern Pennsylvania, Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Committee is a non-profit, non-sectarian, nondenominational organization dedicated to providing caregivers with professional resources necessary to aid persons at risk, identify support organizations for survivors of suicide and provide community awareness.

Light for Life Foundation - Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program
A community-based outreach program of Light for Life Foundation International, Yellow Ribbon offers a program that teaches about the internal nature of depression and loneliness. Suicide Prevention Community Development, Gatekeeper Training, seminars, workshops with fully developed curriculum (and videos) are available.

National Center for Suicide Prevention Training
The National Center for Suicide Prevention Training (NCSPT) provides educational resources to help public officials, service providers, and community-based coalitions develop effective suicide prevention programs and policies. The site also has a resource database composed of suicide prevention articles and information.

Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network
A grassroots team of Tennesseans working to eliminate the stigma of suicide, educate the community about the warning signs of suicide, and ultimately reduce the rate of suicide in the state of Tennessee.

Violence and Injury Prevention Program
The Violence and Injury Prevention Program offers online resources for family members, health care professionals, forensic examiners, law enforcement officers, and others in the aging, mental health, long term care, and public health network.

The HELP Network
The HELP Network is an international network of medical and allied organizations dedicated to reducing firearm injuries and deaths. To achieve this goal, HELP promotes strategies that are based on public health research.

Teen Education and Crisis Hotline
Teen Education and Crisis Hotline work to prevent suicide by appropriate education, intervention and referral. One of their programs is Parents Against Teen Suicide (PATS). PATS was formed for the purpose of detecting youth at risk and providing preventive education an intervention service for high risk youth in the areas of drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, child abuse, and suicide.

Not My Kid
Not MY Kid, Inc. is dedicated to raising awareness about the most prevalent youth and adolescent mental and behavioral health issues.

Kids Help Phone
Kids Help Phone is Canada's only toll-free, 24-hour, bilingual and anonymous phone counseling, referral and Internet service for children and youth. Every day, professional counselors provide immediate, caring support to young people in urban and rural communities across the country.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth

NOPCAS is committed to stopping the tragic epidemic of suicide in minority communities. The organization is developing innovative strategies to address this urgent national problem.



Screening for Mental HealthScreening for Mental Health, Inc., (SMH) first introduced the concept of large-scale mental health screenings with National Depression Screening Day in 1991. SMH programs now include both in-person and online programs for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcohol problems, and suicide prevention. Programs are implemented by local clinicians at mental health facilities, hospitals, primary care offices, social service agencies, colleges/ universities, workplaces, schools and the military. In 2006 alone, nearly 600,000 screenings were completed at some 12,000 facilities using SMH programs.


Columbia University TeenScreen Program
The Columbia University TeenScreen Program is a national mental health and suicide risk screening program dedicated to helping parents find teens with the known risk factors for suicide by making voluntary mental health check-ups available to all American families.

Signs of Suicide
SOS Signs of Suicide® programs are depression awareness and suicide prevention programs that can be implemented in one or more classroom periods by existing school staff. The SOS programs can also be used in alternative settings serving youth such as: social clubs, after school programs, and juvenile justice systems.
